  9. METROSOFT SHIPS METROLOCK--THE FIRST LICENSING SYSTEM
  10. FOR NEXTSTEP THAT LOCKS OBJECTS, PALETTES AND
  11. APPLICATIONS.

  13. SAN DIEGO, California, June 13, 1994 -- Metrosoft announced today
  14. that it has begun embedding  MetroLock in its products. MetroLock
  15. is the first licensing system for NEXTSTEP which enables the
  16. commercial sale of ObjectWare. It consists of an easy-to-use licensing
  17. kit which contains a central locking mechanism and a number of
  18. different locking schemes.

  20. The following locking schemes are provided:

  22. TimeBomb - Protects from use beyond a given date
  23. DemoTime - Restricts use to a given number of minutes
  24. LimitedSeat - Restricts use to a given number of simultaneous network
  25. users
  26. LimitedApp - Allows a class to be used in only one application
  27. Snooper - Allows an administrator to monitor usage
  28.  
  29. MetroLock has the following features:
  30. - Easily secures applications, object class libraries and palettes
  31. - Locking mechanism is extremely difficult to detect
  32. - Impossible to permanently "patch around" to defeat locking
  33. - Encrypted locking scheme parameters
  34. - Requires no source code modification
  35. - Transparent to end-user
  36. - No cumbersome license server
  37. - Locking schemes may be layered (e.g., TimeBomb and LimitedSeat)
  38. - Palettes may be secured differently for developers and end-users
  39. - Sophisticated foundation class for custom locking schemes
  40. - Multi-threaded for application performance

  42. MetroLock includes a MetroLocker utility used during the build
  43. process for protecting classes. MetroLock also includes makefiles,
  44. the MetroLock library and full developer documentation. An easy-to-use
  45. LockSmith utility is provided to update the locking parameters of
  46. secured applications (e.g., increase the number of seats allowed
  47. by a given app). LockSmith can also add or remove schemes themselves.

  49. The Limited Seat protection can be used to lock out users above
  50. the licensed maximum (and optionally send the system administrator
  51. an e-mail message indicating that the maximum has been reached),
  52. or to allow users beyond the maximum to use the object or application
  53. but also notify the system administrator.

  55. Based on a customer request, MetroLock has a Snooper scheme and a
  56. Snooper utility, which allows system administrators to know not
  57. only how many users are using a licensed object or application,
  58. but who, by host names, are using it.
